It was o one of my dream come true. I always wanted to travel
around the world and learn different cultures and get more exposure. Until
August 2012 I was only able to be in one country other than my own and that was
Sri Lanka.
It was an invitation from my brother who was in Singapore
when he was coming back to Maldives from Australia. I was so happy about the
invitation and accepted it as I had balance in my annual leave so it wouldn’t be
very difficult for me to go.
It was the longest journey on a flight as it took about 4.5
hours to reach Singapore. The Airport and the arrangements in the Airport made
such a good one, I knew that what people talk about Singapore is really true.
It was a fantastic Airport.
My brother and his friend (Rafie) were there to receive me.
When we reached home it was almost 10:30 in the night. I saw a different
picture there. I felt like it was Hulhumale’ All I can see is flats and cars parked
outside those apartment buildings. I was like “Is this Singapore?” and they
explained me that as Singapore is a small country they have housing plans like
that.
One thing I found about Singapore is that they are very advanced
when it comes to mobiles. Almost everyone has the latest phones, even the old
people. It must be because it is comparably cheap in there. What do they use that for? Phone calls, messaging?
It is on the train I observe what they do with their phone. I did poke into see
what they are doing. Almost 95% of the people use the phone to play games. Few of
them I saw reading news or browsing, others they do use social media.
Most of them speak in English, but a different kind of English
as for people like us won’t understand a single thing they were talking about. Two
incidents; I was very closely listening to a conversation of a group of school
students and the only two words I could get was Okaay and Where. I thought it was because I am not used to
their accent but my brother does too seem to be lost. I understood a full
sentence when a boy said “you are very boring” to another guy when he refused
to come to play with him. I think that was a success :P
I found that they do like a lot to wear shortest shorts. It is
the most common thing you can see from Singapore. Every shop would have a corner specialised for
this”special” product. Apart from the
Shorts I never saw a Singaporean smiling, not in a single case (except few
times when they served us). One time when I and my brother were walking a lady
smiled and it was like miracle to see she was from another country. It was so
sad :P
I didn’t find them very welcoming. I didn’t see them as
friendly kind of people. They live their own life and don’t bother with other’s
lives. I found them much disciplined and well mannered. There was no fear that
we might me looted or even there could be robbery. It was very much safe there.
Another very important thing I found that, they do like to eat a lot. All the
food outlets will be fully packed and each and every shopping mall’s 35% to 50%
will be food outlets.
Singapore is a beautiful country and an advanced country. They
have succeeded in long term planning and that is why they are where they are
today. I can see from where ever I go that it been planned in a way that it
would maximise the revenue. The plan is that whoever goes there with money or whoever
earns money there will spend most of it there itself which makes the cash
outflow from the country minimal. They have made this small country into a
beautiful country. They have created an environment for the investors to come
and invest. As far as I hear 1 in a 6 in a millionaire in Singapore. If this is
so it is a great achievement.
The days I spend in Singapore were awesome. I visited many
places and found it very interesting too.
I enjoyed every bit of it and I have several people to thank for. First
of all it should be Rafie and her husband Rifau who was very welcoming. I felt
like it was my home. They didn’t let me feel bored and tried to bring maximum
out of those few days. One very important portion I liked was the food. The combination
of my brother and Rifau made us to eat such wonderful dishes. “Kulhiboakiba” was the best. My brother, who was there with me to make
sure I never lose a single part of it.
Thank you all, I would never forget “The Singapore Trip” and your hospitality
The trip was a picture, I would say a different picture that
was drawn in my life.
